Other than the good news on the software update, unfortunately Nokia announced that it has no plan, yet, to bring the MeeGo upgrade available for Nokia N900. Reason? According to Nokia, “It’s really about ensuring that you have the best possible experience designed for the features on your Nokia N900 device. Nokia realises this news may be a disappointment for some, rest assured that Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo software on your Nokia N900″

The N900 is priced at NT$22,100 (US$697). According to Nokia “N900 is the latest answer for the premium market, which has been dominated by Apple, RIM and HTC in Taiwan”. Nokia also promised that it will unveil high-end devices based on Symbian 3 and MeeGo in the second half of 2010.

N900 was also recently launched in Australia and it is expected to launch in India soon.

Quick and dirty bit of news for you lovely subjects of the United Kingdom and independent spirits of Ireland: Vodafone’s online store is showing the much hailed N900 as an option, with handsets expected at some point next month. The Irish arm of the carrier had already admitted it’ll be offering the device, and we foresee the two launching the handset simultaneously early in the new year, with regrettably little competition from the other UK carriers. As Electric Pig reported when the N900 first started shipping, only O2 replied with a “not yet,” while Orange and T-Mobile were presumably too busy making out to respond.

Reuters reports that Nokia plans to launch only one Maemo-powered smartphone in 2010, according to a source with direct knowledge of Nokia’s 2010 product roadmap.

Though a Nokia spokesman would not comment on plans for future products, he did say that the company remains committed to its Symbian operating system. Nokia’s stance has not changed since August when it negated reports that said that the company would begin focusing on Maemo as its flagship operating system, as we reported.

Nokia began shipping its first Maemo-powered smartphone, the Nokia N900, earlier this month. The powerful device became available in U.S. flagship stores mid-November, as we reported.

This Cortex-A8 phone with 32GB of on-board storage is ripe with potential and the perfect holiday gift for grandma as long as she’s comfortable dropping into the X Terminal for the occasional “rm -R /home/user/.microfeed” command. It’s still listed for $649 unlocked from Nokia direct though that price will be dropping soon enough.

Following the official announcement that Nokia N900 starts shipping in Europe last week, Nokia today went ahead and confirmed Nokia N900 availability in the USA starting from today. The N900 is not getting a subsidized deal with some of the major carriers but it will instead be sold independently SIM-free.

As our specs testify, the Nokia N900 comes with full quad-band GSM support and 1700/2100/900 UMTS/HSDPA support no matter what region it’s targeted at. So, you should be getting 3G connection with T-Mobile USA, but only EDGE with AT&T.

The Nokia N900 is already shipping to users who pre-ordered the popular device. For the rest of you, Nokia N900 should be available quite soon in New York and Chicago Nokia Flagship stores, nokiausa.com and various independent retailers and e-tailers including Amazon.com for a price around 649 US dollars.

Sygic just announced that their GPS application (which works on iPhones and other devices) now also works on Nokia Maemo phones. The GPS application will be ready for sale from Sygic website before next year. Nokia’s Maemo-based future has begun: the N900 is shipping. According to Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the eagerly awaited handset is now en route to at least some pre-order customers. We’ll soon see if this new generation of Nokia smartphones will be enough to generate the type of mass-market / high-margin appeal that Nokia needs at the top end of its product portfolio or if it’s just a tentative first step on a potentially wobbly new platform.

Update: Nokia’s official blog says to expect the Maemo 5 device to land in “Europe, the Middle-East, Russia and North America” shortly. However, it won’t be compatible with the new 3G SIM cards from 3 in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark and Austria until a software update hits sometime later this year.

The market release of Nokia´s latest internet tablet was delayed for a while, but we now have information that reveals the device is coming to the US and Europe quite soon really.

The online store NewEgg indicates the Nokia N900 will be available in the US on November 14. We are definitely impressed with the performance of the prototype of the much-anticipated device, so we just cannot wait to get our hands on a final, retail unit of the gadget running Maemo 5, operating system with enviable multitasking and internet capabilities. According to Pocket-link, the Nokia N900 is making its European début two days later, on November 16. Nokia´s regional websites tell us the device will be available at a price of $649 in the US and $890 (599 EUR ) in Europe.

After being delayed a bit by Nokia, the Maemo 5-based N900 is now almost ready to hit the market.

In the UK, customers will be able to buy the Nokia N900 starting November 16 and, depending on the contract and data plan they choose, they can get the smartphone even for free.

For example, you won’t have to pay anything for the N900 is you choose a 2-yr contract agreement with a £35 monthly plan from Orange (which includes 900 minutes). There are also many O2 deals – for instance, £30 per month for two years lets you have the N900 at only £10.
