Bold 9900 is a good looking phone and it’s the slimmest BlackBerry yet. When the phone was announced, T-Mobile USA was the first one to grab it but now it looks like T-Mobile USA is not alone anymore because our friends over at Pocket-Lint  are saying that Vodafone and Three UK will also launch this device. It’s also the fastest BlackBerry yet with 1.2 GHz processor and the first one to feature NFC capabilities. T-Mobile USA is launching this device later this year, so I think Vodafone and Three UK will also launch it later this year.

I think this is very good news for all the BlackBerry owners in UK. As competition between mobile networks in UK is very strong, my sixth sense is saying that other UK carriers i.e. Orange, T-Mobile, O2 etc. will also launch the Bold 9900. So BlackBerry lovers in UK, are you getting the device later this year?

Although it follows the familiar design pattern of other BlackBerry Bold handhelds, the screen on the Bold 9900 is significantly bigger and sharper than its predecessors, at 2.8″ diagonal size and 640 x 480 pixels resolution. It’s a capacitive touchscreen, and although much smaller than a “traditional” touchscreen smartphone, it is bigger than the one on the competing Nokia E6.

The keyboard is well designed and quite possibly the best in class. The little touchpad controller on recent BlackBerry handsets is easy to use and almost makes the touchscreen unnecessary.

Inside the Bold 9900 is a very fast 1.2 GHz processor combined with 768MB of RAM, which is a lot of power for a handset such as this, and it certainly makes it powerful enough for multimedia playback and gaming.. assuming that the smallish screen isn’t a problem for you. There’s also a generous 8GB of onboard Flash memory plus a microSD slot.

The operating system is the latest BlackBerry 7 OS, and from what we have seen the user interface at least is a huge improvement over the one found in versions 6 and 5, which is frankly pretty ghastly and not up to the standards of the competition. The usual suite of BlackBerry applications are bundled plus a premium version of “Docs to Go”. This new operating system will not be available for older handsets, which may disappoint many existing BlackBerry users.

On the back is a 5 megapixel camera capable of 720p video recording (the Bold 9900 can also play back 720p video too). Inside, the Bold 9900 supports GPS, has a built in digital compass, accelerometer and a proximity sensor.

This is a tri-band HSPA+ device with support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi networks plus quad-band GSM. There is also a BlackBerry Bold 9930 variant which adds CDMA/EVDO support for US networks. The Bold 9900 also supports Bluetooth 2.1. The whole package weighs 130 grams and measures 115 x 66 x 10.5mm including the 1230mAh battery.

Although the Bold 9900 is clearly a useful improvement over previous models, it is only really likely to attract existing BlackBerry users looking for an upgrade. It’s worth bearing in mind that RIM shocked investors by recently issuing a warning about profits, and their new PlayBook tablet has had some very poor reviews. RIM really need to take some of the expertise that is clearly apparent here and make something that will claw back some market share.

We suspect though that many existing BlackBerry users will want the Bold 9900 very much indeed. It should be available this summer, and although no guidance is available on price, we would estimate that it will be a little cheaper than the Torch, so perhaps retailing at about €400 to €450 at launch.

While the device and its new OS have leaked  before, this is the first time when the source is RIM itself. We know for sure now, that the upcoming BlackBerry Bold Touch will be running BlackBerry 7 OS (not the rumored 6.1), and that, unfortunately, it won’t be QNX based. All that we are left with now, is to stay tuned for the official announcement at the BlackBerry World Conference.

The Touch 9860 “Monza” will have the highest-resolution screen in a BlackBerry today, according to the early specs. It’ll have a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 display, 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, 1.2 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, and 4 GB of internal storage. The big stars of the device will be a near-field communications chip, which will most commonly be used for tap-and-go payments, and the magnetic compass, which will enable augmented reality applications.

The big BlackBerry World show is coming up fast, and we’re expecting at least the Bold Touch to get announced, but it would be hard to imagine carriers not making their own BlackBerry announcements shortly thereafter, considering summer is right around the corner. The next breed of RIM handsets are mostly iterative and simply keeping pace with specs, but the push for NFC is more aggressive than we’ve seen from any other manufacturer, and as a result, I suspect RIM will be early in forming partnerships with banks and other financial institutions to actually make use of it all.

Unlike the other Curve models, this one drops the keyboard and relies on the touchscreen exclusively.So much so that the new mockups of the BlackBerry Curve Touch appear to have dropped even the trackpad.

We wouldn’t put too much stock in those images though, they seem kind of wonky (in the side views, what are those bumpy things on the bottom half of where the touchscreen should be?).

Still, a more certain rumor (as far as rumors can be certain) is that the BlackBerry Curve Touch will be announced at BlackBerry World next month with a June or July launch. T-Mobile will reportedly be carrying the phone.

The Curve Touch is the GSM version of the BlackBerry Malibu, both of which should have an 800MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 3.25” HVGA screen and 5MP camera with HD video recording.

BlackBerry World will take place 3-5 May and if these rumors pan out, we’ll see the BlackBerry Curve Touch go official then.

Aside from that, the Sedona was already looking in pretty good shape: 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, and near-field communications chip to make contactless payments and execute other tap-and-go tasks. The status of a digital compass in the Sedona was up in the air, so that could be another addition we see in the Orlando to further differentiate it.

The BlackBerry 9300 and 8520/30 had clearly relegated the Curve family to the lower, entry-level tier of devices, but it’s looking like the next generation might be a different story. Most of the RIM leaks lately have come attached with rumours of an announcement at BlackBerry World next month, so it’s not unreasonable to hope this one comes out too (especially considering the show is taking place in Orlando, Florida). Three devices would be a busy show by RIM’s standards, but if they wanted to really blow our socks off, they could announce the whole stable of five or six devices they have lined up. That’s probably more wishful thinking than anything, but what would you guys like to see at BB World?

There are no details as yet on when the BlackBerry Curve Touch will be available as soon as we get some more information we will let you guys know.

There’s no 3G either, but that’ll change with another device coming out soon: the Bold 9788 (pictured above), RIM’s first TD-SCDMA BlackBerry. China has their own 3G standard over there, so requires a fair bit of specialized work. Aside from running on China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network (which will work in Taiwan too), we only really know that it runs OS 6, like the 9780 elsewhere in the world. It’s probably safe to assume the rest of the specs, like 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, 2.4-inch HVGA display, 624 MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM are the same too.

RIM’s made it abundantly clear that they’re interested in selling internationally, and supporting China’s 3G standards is something of a necessity if they want in on the world’s biggest market. There’s also the issue of addressing governmental security concerns, but it seems like RIM has that pretty much under control.

Last week we’ve seen a bunch of new BlackBerry smartphones, the BlackBerry Storm 3, the BlackBerry Dakota, the BlackBerry Curve Apollo and now we’re looking at a new Curve family member.

The Sedona is referred to as the R010 internally and we might have to wait a while to see it hit stores. The phone comes with a 480 x 360 display, 512MB of RAM, 800MHz processor, 5-megapixel camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and BlackBerry OS 6.1 under the hood.

We can’t offer you any pricing details just yet for the Sedona, but considering we’re looking at a member of the BlackBerry Curve family, chances are that we’re looking at yet another cheap smartphone that’s going to be quite affordable, especially when bundled with a new contract, to the masses.
