Bold 9900 is a good looking phone and it’s the slimmest BlackBerry yet. When the phone was announced, T-Mobile USA was the first one to grab it but now it looks like T-Mobile USA is not alone anymore because our friends over at Pocket-Lint  are saying that Vodafone and Three UK will also launch this device. It’s also the fastest BlackBerry yet with 1.2 GHz processor and the first one to feature NFC capabilities. T-Mobile USA is launching this device later this year, so I think Vodafone and Three UK will also launch it later this year.

I think this is very good news for all the BlackBerry owners in UK. As competition between mobile networks in UK is very strong, my sixth sense is saying that other UK carriers i.e. Orange, T-Mobile, O2 etc. will also launch the Bold 9900. So BlackBerry lovers in UK, are you getting the device later this year?

Although it follows the familiar design pattern of other BlackBerry Bold handhelds, the screen on the Bold 9900 is significantly bigger and sharper than its predecessors, at 2.8″ diagonal size and 640 x 480 pixels resolution. It’s a capacitive touchscreen, and although much smaller than a “traditional” touchscreen smartphone, it is bigger than the one on the competing Nokia E6.

The keyboard is well designed and quite possibly the best in class. The little touchpad controller on recent BlackBerry handsets is easy to use and almost makes the touchscreen unnecessary.

Inside the Bold 9900 is a very fast 1.2 GHz processor combined with 768MB of RAM, which is a lot of power for a handset such as this, and it certainly makes it powerful enough for multimedia playback and gaming.. assuming that the smallish screen isn’t a problem for you. There’s also a generous 8GB of onboard Flash memory plus a microSD slot.

The operating system is the latest BlackBerry 7 OS, and from what we have seen the user interface at least is a huge improvement over the one found in versions 6 and 5, which is frankly pretty ghastly and not up to the standards of the competition. The usual suite of BlackBerry applications are bundled plus a premium version of “Docs to Go”. This new operating system will not be available for older handsets, which may disappoint many existing BlackBerry users.

On the back is a 5 megapixel camera capable of 720p video recording (the Bold 9900 can also play back 720p video too). Inside, the Bold 9900 supports GPS, has a built in digital compass, accelerometer and a proximity sensor.

This is a tri-band HSPA+ device with support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi networks plus quad-band GSM. There is also a BlackBerry Bold 9930 variant which adds CDMA/EVDO support for US networks. The Bold 9900 also supports Bluetooth 2.1. The whole package weighs 130 grams and measures 115 x 66 x 10.5mm including the 1230mAh battery.

Although the Bold 9900 is clearly a useful improvement over previous models, it is only really likely to attract existing BlackBerry users looking for an upgrade. It’s worth bearing in mind that RIM shocked investors by recently issuing a warning about profits, and their new PlayBook tablet has had some very poor reviews. RIM really need to take some of the expertise that is clearly apparent here and make something that will claw back some market share.

We suspect though that many existing BlackBerry users will want the Bold 9900 very much indeed. It should be available this summer, and although no guidance is available on price, we would estimate that it will be a little cheaper than the Torch, so perhaps retailing at about €400 to €450 at launch.

While the device and its new OS have leaked  before, this is the first time when the source is RIM itself. We know for sure now, that the upcoming BlackBerry Bold Touch will be running BlackBerry 7 OS (not the rumored 6.1), and that, unfortunately, it won’t be QNX based. All that we are left with now, is to stay tuned for the official announcement at the BlackBerry World Conference.

Blackberry 6 offers quite a few new features, like universal search, a WebKit browser, and user interface overhaul. There’s also a new Social Feeds app which lets you post updates to Facebook, Twitter, and instant messaging clients simultaneously, as well as catch up on updates from multiple sources in one place.

Even though leaked versions of OS 6 for the CDMA Bold and Curve 9650 have been available for some time, we’ve been waiting for official roll-outs since the Torch launch over the summer. After Verizon catches up, we’ll still be waiting on OS 6 on the Bold 9700 and the Pearl 9100, after which point I would hope that QNX-powered BlackBerry smartphone would be somewhere in the picture.

BlackBerry Bold 9780  is the first BlackBerry Bold smartphone to come with the new BlackBerry® 6 operating system and the  2nd phone after  Torch 9800 to come with BB OS 6.0.

The BlackBerry® Bold™ 9780 is now available in the Indian market for Rs. 27990 INR (excluding VAT).

These are the first guys in the U.S. to actually start selling the refreshed Bold, but we can expect AT&T to launch theirs shortly too. Telus and Bell are already selling the 9780 up here in Canada, but Rogers seems to be having some trouble getting theirs out the door.

The BlackBerry 9780 is a moderate upgrade on the old 9700, bumping up the camera to 5 megapixels and increasing the RAM to 512 MB. It also runs OS 6, which comes with universal search, a revamped UI, and a WebKit browser, though that’s all coming to the 9700 with an upgrade in the near future. All of the rest of the specs are identical, like 624 MHz processor, HVGA 2.4-inch display, Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3G. The chassis is identical too, if you’re worried about accessories being compatible.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is a refresh of the 9700, including 512 MB of RAM instead of 256 MB, a 5 megapixel camera instead of 3.2 megapixels, and the operating system is now 6.0, complete with WebKit browser, universal search, and a bevvy of UI upgrades. The 9700 will be getting the same features soon enough. Other specs, like the HVGA display, Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS, and 624 MHz processor are exactly the same.

Now that the new Bold has found its way across all three major Canadian carriers, I have to wonder why there’s such difference in pricing. $50 between Rogers and Telus is significant, but the fact that Bell lands precisely between the two strikes me as fishy for some reason. Whatever the reason, it can’t be that big of a deal, since the 9780 is just going to quietly replace the 9700 and not really attract any new customers – anyone going in for a traditional BlackBerry would have just got the old Bold instead.

As per usual, the folks at Best Buy (yes, in Canada) have lifted the lid on any ‘surprise’ Virgin Mobile might have wanted. Best Buy posted the Virgin Mobile 9780 on their site yesterday, showing off the ‘SuperTab’ ($124.99) and off-contract ($499.99) pricing.

At the moment Best Buy lists the Virgin Mobile 9780 as ‘in-store only’, but look for that ‘buy now’ button to appear real soon… and you better be fast on the click when it happens, because I have a feeling these white bad boys are going to fly off the shelves mighty quick.

White BlackBerry devices always seem to be in high demand, in part due to the somewhat ‘rare’ nature of the livery. In the past I’ve managed to get my hands on a few white Berry devices, and truth be told… they’re sweet.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 isn’t much more than an incremental upgrade on the older Bold 9700, upping the app memory to 512 MB and the camera to 5 megapixels from 3.2. Everything else, like the body, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, and a 2.4″ HVGA display are all the same. Of course, it also runs OS 6, which includes such goodies as universal search, a WebKit browser, and an updated user interface, but all of that is finding its way to the previous Bold soon enough.

The 9780 isn’t exactly a blockbuster, but it’s the ideal handset for those faithful to the traditional BlackBerry form factor and want the latest and greatest. Compared to the hardware that Android and iOS are finding themselves on, however, the Bold 9780 might seem a little stale, even with the fresh coat of paint from OS 6.

They’ve let it be known that pricing on the BlackBerry Bold 9780 will hit $149.99 on a 3-year term, and $499.99 off-contract. Keep in mind, these prices haven’t been confirmed, but I see no reason to doubt their accuracy. The device will be available on your choice of carrier (Bell, Virgin and Rogers) at any Best Buy Canada location starting November 9th.

If the Bold 9780 just isn’t what you’re looking for, Best Buy Canada already has the BlackBerry Torch up for grabs. A slightly different form-factor and feature set for sure, but for my money it’s a solid performer. The Torch is available from Best Buy Canada starting at $179.99, and you of course have your choice of carrier. Bell, TELUS, Rogers and Virgin Mobile contracts are all readily available.
