Nokia Siemens claims to have made the first voice call using Long Term Evolution commercial components and industry compliant software, putting the fourth generation wireless technology closer to a commercial reality.

The company utilized its Flexi Multiradio Base Station to complete the call from a Nokia Siemens research and development center in Ulm, Germany. The Flexi Base Station, which is fully compliant to the 3GPP Release 8 LTE standard and supports EDGE, HSPA and LTE data connectivity, has already shipped to 80 operators worldwide.
