Will the next version of the iPhone have an upgraded 5MP camera? According to tipsters for DigitTimes, OmniVision Technologies has received an order for 5MP CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) for a next-generation iPhone expected to be out in the second half of next year. The company became a supplier to the iconic touchscreen device by beating out competitor Aptina Imaging which provides the 2MP CIS for the iPhone 3G. OmniVision will ship 40-45 million CIS units for the iPhone in 2010, about double what it shipped last year. Including orders for the iPod, OmniVision’s shipments to Apple ran to 65 million units in 2009. The sources say that the company is raising its wafer starts at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company beginning at the start of the new year.

It seems that complaint report on the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD has finally paid off. Samsung just announced an upcoming firmware update that will address some of the issues the user community has reported. Unfortunately, the less-than-24fps video recording is not among them.

There are three changes that the firmware update will bring. The first is an improved browser, with faster user interface. The browser on the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD needed a kick in the pants for its real life experience.

The next update is the addition of kinetic scrolling, which the browser already has, but the rest of the interface doesn’t. Samsung spruced up the S60 5th edition UI with its widget happy TouchWiz UI, but changes didn’t go much further than the homescreen. At least now, the Samsung Omnia HD can catch up with the rest of the touchscreen gang.

Finally, there’s a new graphic engine, which increases the “the speed to access the multimedia content”. Notice the word “access” – this means better playback, but still no stable 24 frames per second for 720p video recording. When we reviewed the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD, the frame rate was our major complaint, after the audio recording issue has been fixed.

Nonetheless, these three things were mentioned in the report on the Omnia HD and Panashe Michael Ngwerume who wrote it can tick them off the checklist. Score one for the Samsung Omnia HD enthusiasts.

The new Omnia HD firmware should be available in January 2010, starting with the UK and then moving on with other European markets, Asia, Africa and the rest of the world. To install the update, you’re going to need Samsung PC Studio 7 installed on your computer. You can just download it from Samsung’s website.

AT&T is putting out a lot of cell phones, and one of them is the Nokia 2330. This one isn’t the iPhone, as it is simply a candy bar phone that isn’t too advanced.

The Nokia 2330 has a VGA camera, an FM radio, Bluetooth, speakerphone, personal organizer, as well as a WAP browser. It is availble for free with a service contract.

Google’s semi-secret Nexus One handset has been more or less exhaustively leaked at this point, with very few cats left to let out of the bag. The only two major points left were the tech specs and the release date – and now, even those have made their way out.

Not only did they share the above spec sheet, but they also mentioned that Google’s planning on selling the Nexus One on an invite-only basis come January 5th.

What exactly that entails, we’ve got no idea. Who gets an invite? Certainly not Google employees – they already have the handsets. Long time Google app users? Members of the Android development community? Dudes named Greg who write about cell phones on the Internet all day? Either way, we just Google opens up sales to everyone before too long.

The cheaper-than-Corby Samsung Corby Pop C3510 is now kind of official, as it has just appeared on Samsung India’s website.

As we previously said, the Corby Pop C3510 resembles the original Corby, but it comes with fewer features.

The new phone offers a 2.8 inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, FM radio, “multi Instant Messaging”, 1.3MP camera, and 22MB of internal memory. Its battery should provide a talk time of up to 8 hours.

Samsung Corby Pop C3510 should be soon available in India. We don’t have an exact release date, but we know its retail price: 7000 INR ($150).

Manufacturers and carriers are showing commendable restraint in avoiding totally bastardized, walled-garden versions of Android on their handsets (for the most part), but they’re not avoiding it altogether — take Sony Ericsson here, for instance. The company has announced that it’s expanding the reach of its PlayNow app store to cover Android in concert with its launch of the X10, which presumably means that users will be juggling a minimum of two sources for third-party wares on this thing. Long-term, this kind of needless fragmentation seems like one of the greatest threats to Android’s ability to become and remain a heavyweight player in the smartphone ring — but then again, what do we know? It’s not like these guys haven’t already figured out how to dominate before with UIQ… ah, wait. Anyhoo, yeah, back to the topic at hand: devs are now invited to submit their Android apps for inclusion in the PlayNow store, so hey, you may as well — the phone’s looking to be a hottie, so it can’t hurt to have your stuff featured on there, we figure.

Even through the lean years, Moto’s been making waves in China where it enjoys comparably high popularity — it was one of the first major manufacturers to throw its support behind the nation’s homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G tech, after all, and it’s had a tendency to get the company’s sexier WinMo smartphones like the SURF. On that note, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see that they’ve now announced not one, not two, but three fairly attractive, high-end Android handsets specifically for duty in the Far East, one for each of China’s big three carriers (each of which employs a different 3G technology, per the gub’mint’s orders). Starting on the left, the XT701 is the phone that we’d believed to be the Sholes Tablet — and considering that it uses HSPA for China Unicom’s airwaves, we still have no reason to believe it couldn’t make the leap across the Pacific. The MT710 (pictured center) is an OPhone for China Mobile and stands the least chance of making an unfettered jump to another continent since it uses a completely customized UI along with a positively China-only TD-SCDMA radio. Finally, the XT800 on the right looks like a Dell Mini 3i done right to us, rocking dual-mode GSM and EV-DO for China Telecom’s rather heterogeneous network. We’ve got to hand it to Moto here: by all appearances, these 3.7-inch WVGA, 5 megapixel beasts could get Android fans drooling pretty much anywhere in the world, so let’s get ‘em over to Europe and America on the double, eh?

Two Snapdragon-powered phones with large touchscreens are taking the first steps to the pockets of T-Mobile US consumers. Yep, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 passed through FCC testing and it and the HTC HD2 both are on their way to T-Mobile USA.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 has obviously passed through the scrutiny of the Federal commission, but the interesting part is the 3G test. The tested UMTS bands were I, IV and VIII, or in other words 900/1700/2100MHz. That definitely points in T-Mobile’s direction.

WMExperts bring the second bit of good news for T-Mobile customers – they got the ROM image for the US HTC HD2 and it seems heavily bound for T-Mobile as well. They also share some of the versions of the apps that will be available inside – ROM version 2.01, Windows Mobile 6.5 build 21896, Opera Mobile 9.7, TeleNav GPS navigation 5.5.34 and Teeter 2.0 (hooray!).

The rumored release date for the HTC HD2 in the US is March 2010. The release date for the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 on the other hand is anyone’s guess.

Now that the craze over the iPhone 3GS has all but simmered down, onlookers are wondering what Apple has in store for 2010. And if rumors are true, we might just see a new iPhone next year in the iPhone 4G. All these speculations are coming after discovering a booked “Corporate Event” at the Moscone Center Calendar from June 28 to July 2.

Basing it on experience, people are anticipating the launch of the iPhone 4G at the WWDC 2010, the same time that the iPhone 3GS made its debut at the WWDC 2009. What do you think? The idea is not far off.
